Black Hole Collision: 3 Supermassive Giants on a Crash Course in a Distant Galaxy (2026)

Scientists have discovered a trio of supermassive black holes in a distant galaxy, each on the verge of collision. This finding offers compelling evidence that black holes grew rapidly in the early universe through mergers, a process that could be key to understanding the formation of these massive celestial entities. The galaxy, catalogued as J0148-4214, is so far away that its light has taken 12.5 billion years to reach us, providing a glimpse into the early universe. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) measured the motion of hydrogen gas swirling around the black holes, allowing scientists to estimate their masses and accretion rates. Two of the black holes reside at the center of the galaxy, separated by 620 light-years, with one having a mass of 80 million times that of the sun and the other a relatively small mass of 600,000 solar masses, yet growing at an extraordinary rate. The third black hole, located 5,500 light-years from the center, has a mass of two million solar masses, about half that of the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way. This discovery raises intriguing possibilities about the formation of these black holes and the potential for future gravitational-wave detections. However, the third black hole might not be on a collision course with the other two, presenting a classic three-body problem.
